The 36th Ryder Cup, K Club, Ireland

Europe romped home with their third successive Ryder Cup win at the K Club in Dublin. Live coverage for this year’s Ryder Cup was brought to you in HD for the first time courtesy of CTV and Telegenic Outside Broadcast.

The tournament was undoubtedly the most challenging so far for Broadcast RF’s brand new HD Link wireless systems. With a total of five HD radio cameras deployed around the course, the objective was to use the fewest receive sites, to keep the budget down to a minimum.

The receivers were located at the top of cranes with four specially manufactured sector antennas in two separate locations around the course. They were then fibred back to the OB compound using the ASI stream.

The weather didn’t help too much on the broadcast days. Our engineers, Mark Houghton and John Hayhurst, were concerned that this may affect the RF performance on such an illustrious event.

However, the HD radio cameras performed faultlessly, leaving Mark and John plenty of time to relax and enjoy the golf.

The Smurfit Open and the Ryder Cup were the first ever golfing events to be covered by HD radio cameras and Broadcast RF were happy to supply their services for both.
